Back again
Well, it's about three months since I posted anything about what we're up to. We seem to have been quite busy - weekends seem to have flown by, and the evenings when I might otherwise post have felt very short. Jess is 2½ now, and thoroughly toddler. That is to say she is often delightful, occasionally a terror, and always hard work.
So what news? Well, my leg has largely recovered from its motorbike bash. I still have a bit of a numb patch below my shin, but otherwise healed. I've had my bike back from the repairers, although that did take 2 months, which rather took the p!$$. At about the same time, my legal expenses solicitors wrote to tell me that the other driver admitted liability, which was a great relief, although it's still not all wrapped up.
Work for me has been quite busy, but I'm pleased that we're now recruiting for two people to work in my team:
That should help loosen a few bottlenecks.
The summer, having broadly been a washout, didn't produce a vast number of nice photos. I'll pick some choice ones later, but I haven't been keeping up to date with photo fixing lately either... We did manage a few nice trips, to places like:
- Coombe Abbey Country Park
- Warwick Castle
- Broomey Croft Children's Farm
- National Sea Life Centre, Birmingham
- Southwold.
Aside from that, we've amused ourselves with Lego Indiana Jones, and Wii Fit. ![]()
Jess is mostly potty trained. We're not having many wet accidents, although number twos (I quite like the thoroughly discreet US expression BMs) are not entirely reliable, I'm weary to report...
On the plus side, Jess's recent amusing new phrases include "Mummy, you saved the day!" and "it's very boogie". We believe that she amused Tim and Kev when we stayed with them this weekend. She was also good on her first weekend away from us, when my Mum looked after her here in Leamington while we had an exciting citybreak to Atherstone. OK, I confess, this was a dry run for a proper weekend away which we hope to take in a couple of weeks, after my birthday.
In the meantime, we're all pleased that Strictly is back.
The Lives of Others
Yesterday, we watched The Lives of Others on DVD, last year's winner of the Oscar for the best foreign language film. It's deliberately slow-paced, which really accentuates the details of oppression and human dilemma faced by East Germans living with the daily risk of visitation by the Stasi. It's beautifully filmed in tones of charcoal grey, with languorous music by Gabriel Yared, and a superbly understated and contained lead performance by Ulrich Mühe.
Reading about the film this morning, I discovered that Mühe died of stomach cancer exactly a year ago. So, a note of remembrance to him today, 22 July.
Why mums don't like motorbikes
Yes, it's a cliche, but a fair one, that mums don't like motorbikes. It's a fair cop. If you prang your car, then it's 'oh dear' and swap insurance details. Do the same on a bike and expect to be very pleasantly surprised if you don't get a trip to A&E.
Over two weeks after my accident, and my leg is mostly on the mend. The bruising is just starting to fade to yellow, although it's still very tender if you prod it (I'd prefer it if you didn't), and I still have some loss of sensation just below the kneecap. Lovely, eh?
So, if you'd like to see what two week old bruises look like after 200kg of bike land on your leg, click on the pictures below. What you may not notice until a second glance is that my leg isn't normally this colour. You can see the colour change above my ankle bone - sadly this isn't a tan line...
You can see the tear and scrape marks on my protective trousers, as well as where the zip tore apart on my boots and some tarmac-induced nicks in the leather.
As for the bike, it suffered a broken indicator, scraped clutch cover (on the side of the engine), dented tank, and battered fairings (the blue plastic shielding which deflects wind). I'm hoping that's all - the bike is with the insurer's repair firm getting looked over now.
Spills, not thrills
Had a motorbike accident today. Someone pulled out in front of me, and I had to swerve to avoid her car. Unfortunately, it having been raining, the road was a bit greasy and the back end slipped out. I ended up sliding along the road on my side for about 15 feet under the bike, thinking "ouch, this hurts a bit". Plenty of people stopped (I think it must've looked quite impressive), and one chap was quite quick to run over and lift the bike off my ankle where it was pinned. Pretty much straight away I knew I wasn't too seriously damaged as my ankle worked, and my leg still bore weight.
My trousers and boots did their job, and sacrificed themselves to preserve me. Bike is a bit dented where it slid along the ground - tank, indicator, fairing and gearbox cover are all bashed. I put ice on my calf where it was sorest, and after a couple of hours went to Warwick A&E to get checked over. After a couple more hours wait, I've just been given the all clear for bones, and told I'll probably just hurt a lot tomorrow, and for the next few days. Not as poorly as Alex who broke his leg in a bike accident the other week.
Feeling sore now, so I'm going to bed. I promise I haven't been trying to copy Alex, or practise my Mario Kart Wii moves in the real world...
